Tea and Conversation: Why Chiya Brings People Together

Chiya Table · 9 Oct 2026

In Nepal, when a friend says "chiya khana jaau" (let's go have tea), they're rarely talking about tea. They mean: let's sit down, let's talk, let's spend a bit of time together.

Chiya guff

There's even a phrase for it: chiya guff, chatting over tea. It can be about anything: family news, politics, cricket, plans, problems, jokes. The tea is just the reason to stay a little longer.

Why tea works so well

  • It's affordable, so anyone can join.
  • It's quick to make, so it's always available.
  • It's refillable. "One more?" keeps the conversation going.
  • It's familiar. Everyone has their own memories of chiya at home.

A habit worth keeping

Life in Kathmandu is busier than ever. Phones buzz constantly, traffic eats up hours, and many conversations happen in group chats. In that world, sitting face to face over a cup of tea feels more valuable, not less.

Our name says it all

We called our cafe Chiya Table because we believe the best things happen when people gather around a table with good tea. It's right there on our homepage: good chiya, great food, better conversations.
