Lassi Guide: Plain vs Banana Lassi and Why Nepal Loves It

Chiya Table · 9 Oct 2026

When it's hot outside, few drinks satisfy like a cold, creamy lassi. Made from yoghurt (dahi), it's popular across Nepal and the rest of South Asia.

What is lassi?

Lassi is yoghurt blended with water or milk and usually sugar, served chilled. It's thick, smooth and slightly tangy, filling enough to feel like a snack.

Plain lassi

The classic version: yoghurt, sugar and a little water, blended until frothy.

  • Taste: creamy and gently tangy
  • Best for: cooling down on a hot afternoon

Banana lassi

Plain lassi blended with ripe banana.

  • Taste: sweeter, thicker and fruitier
  • Best for: when you want something more filling, almost like a smoothie

Easy banana lassi at home (2 glasses)

  • 1 cup plain yoghurt
  • 1 ripe banana
  • ½ cup cold milk or water
  • 1–2 tablespoons sugar or honey
  • A few ice cubes

Blend everything until smooth and frothy. Taste and adjust the sweetness. Serve immediately.

Why Nepal loves lassi

Yoghurt holds a special place in Nepali food culture. Juju dhau, the famous "king curd" of Bhaktapur, is just one example. Lassi is an easy, delicious way to enjoy it on a warm day.
