Cold Coffee for Kathmandu's Hot Afternoons

Chiya Table · 9 Oct 2026

Kathmandu summers can be surprisingly hot, especially in the afternoon. That's when the orders for cold coffee start rolling in.

  • It's refreshing without being as sweet as a soft drink.
  • It gives you energy for the rest of the afternoon.
  • It feels like a treat: creamy, cold and indulgent.

Easy cold coffee at home (1 glass)

You'll need:

  • 2 teaspoons instant coffee
  • 2 teaspoons sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons hot water
  • 1 cup cold milk
  • Ice

Method:

  1. Mix the instant coffee, sugar and hot water in a cup until dissolved.
  2. Whisk hard for a minute until it turns light and frothy.
  3. Fill a glass with ice and pour in the cold milk.
  4. Add the coffee mix and stir. Taste and adjust the sweetness.

Tip: blend everything with ice for a thicker, milkshake-style cold coffee.

Cold coffee or cold black coffee?

  • Cold coffee: creamy and sweet, with milk.
  • Cold black coffee: lighter and crisper, no milk.

If you're new to coffee, start with the creamy version.

Pair it with the right setting

Cold coffee is best enjoyed slowly, ideally somewhere with fresh air and shade. Our garden seating under bamboo and thatch was made for exactly that. See it in our gallery.
