Dashain Festival 2026 Dashain, the grandest and most significant Hindu festival in Nepal, celebrates the victory of good over evil, symbolizing Goddess Durga’s triumph over the demon Mahishasura. Spanning 15 days, it is a time for family reunions, vibrant festivities, ancient rituals, and spiritual renewal.

Ghatasthapana (October 11, 2026): Marks the start of Dashain. Families plant Jamara (sacred barley sprouts) in a dark room to prepare for the upcoming blessings. Fulpati (October 17, 2026): Sacred plants and offerings are carried to homes and main shrines in a joyful tradition. Maha Navami (October 19, 2026): The ninth day, dedicated to worshiping Goddess Durga and invoking safety and prosperity for machinery, tools, and vehicles. Vijaya Dashami (October 20, 2026): The main event day. Elders apply red Tika (a paste of rice, yogurt, and vermilion) and place green Jamara on the foreheads of younger family members while bestowing blessings (Aashirwad) for happiness, wealth, and longevity. Kojagat Purnima (October 25, 2026): The full moon day concluding the 15-day festival, dedicated to Goddess Laxmi. Cultural Experience Bamboo Swings (Linge Ping): Massive temporary swings made of bamboo and grass rope are erected in villages and towns for people of all ages to enjoy. Kite Flying: Clear autumn skies fill with colorful kites, symbolizing a request to the rain gods to stop the monsoon rains. Family Reunions: Relatives gather from around the world, sharing traditional feasts, playing card games, and exchanging gifts.
